The New South Wales coast is where most Australians actually live, a narrow, fertile strip pinned between the Pacific and the Great Dividing Range. Sydney sits in the middle of it on one of the finest natural harbours in the world, surrounded by sandstone country whose poor soils produced, paradoxically, a flora of staggering richness: banksia and eucalypt and a heath that erupts into flower in a way that has to be seen.
Behind the beaches, the ranges hold the last patches of Gondwanan rainforest, remnants of the forest that covered this continent when it was still joined to Antarctica and South America. The Wollemi pine, found alive in a hidden canyon in 1994 after being known only from fossils, is the emblem of what these gorges still conceal. The Black Summer fires of 2019 and 2020 tore through much of this country and changed the terms of the conversation permanently.
The organizations here protect the remaining bushland against a coastline under relentless development pressure, defend the rainforest gorges and the koala populations that are sliding toward extinction in the state, and work on a fire problem that no longer behaves the way the models said it would.
