The subcontinent packs an entire world into one landmass: the Himalaya to the north, the Thar desert to the west, the Gangetic plain through the middle, and tropical forest and coast to the south. It supports more than a billion people and, at the same time, tigers, elephants, rhinos, and lions, which is an extraordinary and precarious thing. Nowhere else on Earth do so many people and so much large, dangerous wildlife share the same ground.
The tiger is the axis of Indian conservation, and the Project Tiger reserves have become the mechanism through which much of the country’s remaining forest is protected. The Asiatic lion survives in a single forest in Gujarat, every individual descended from a few dozen animals. The Gangetic plain, meanwhile, is one of the most intensively farmed and most polluted landscapes on the planet, and the river that gives it its name carries the consequences.
The organizations here work on human-wildlife conflict as the central practical problem it is, defend forest corridors that let elephants and tigers move between reserves, and take on air and river pollution at a scale that would daunt any nation.
