Atlantic Canada is a coast of fog and cold water and long memory. The Grand Banks off Newfoundland were once among the most productive fishing grounds on Earth, so thick with cod that early accounts describe lowering a basket and hauling it up full. In 1992 the cod fishery collapsed and was closed, throwing tens of thousands out of work overnight. It has not recovered, and it stands as the starkest lesson in the world about what happens when a fishery is managed on optimism.
The land is boreal forest and barren and bog, the coast is cliff and cove, and the Bay of Fundy at the region’s western edge has the highest tides on the planet, a rise and fall of sixteen metres that drives an ecosystem of astonishing productivity and feeds migrating shorebirds by the million.
The organizations here work on marine protection and the slow, uncertain business of rebuilding a fishery, defend the coastal wetlands and the Fundy mudflats, and protect the Acadian forest, a distinctive mix of northern hardwood and conifer that has been logged hard and is now down to fragments of its old-growth self.
