Mexico is one of the handful of megadiverse countries, and much of that wealth is stacked in the Sierra Madre, the great mountain chains that run down both sides of the country and hold cloud forest, pine-oak woodland, and canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. The monarch butterflies of eastern North America converge each winter on a few hectares of fir forest in these mountains, clustering so thickly that branches break.
To the west, Baja California is a long finger of desert reaching into the Pacific, and the sea it encloses, the Gulf of California, was called the world’s aquarium by Cousteau. It is that rich, and it is in trouble. The vaquita, the smallest porpoise on Earth, is down to a handful of individuals, drowned in gillnets set illegally for another fish whose swim bladder is worth more than cocaine.
The organizations here defend the monarch forests against illegal logging, protect the Gulf and what remains of the vaquita, and conserve the cloud forests and canyons of the Sierra Madre. They work in a country of extraordinary natural wealth and thin enforcement.
