Patagonia is the end of the inhabited world, a country of wind and space at the bottom of the Americas where the Andes finally break apart into fjords and islands and the steppe runs east to the Atlantic under a sky that seems too large. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field is the largest mass of ice outside the poles and Greenland, and the glaciers that spill from it calve into lakes of an unreal blue.
The steppe was grazed hard by sheep for a century and much of it is degraded, the grass eaten out and the soil blowing away. That decline, and the collapse of wool prices, has opened an opportunity, and the great story of Patagonian conservation in this generation has been the purchase of failing estancias and their conversion into national parks, with guanaco and puma and rhea returning to land that had been fenced against them.
The organizations here drive that rewilding, defend the free-flowing rivers against large hydropower schemes, and protect a marine coast where southern right whales calve and enormous penguin colonies come ashore.
