The Bluegrass is a landscape built on limestone, and that stone is the whole story: it enriches the soil, feeds the springs, and grew the pastures and ancient bur oaks that made this country famous. To the north the land falls away to the Ohio River, a great continental artery that carried commerce and industry and, for a long time, whatever those left behind. Between the two lies a region of uncommon pastoral beauty under real pressure.
