Great Plains Nature Nonprofits

The Great Plains were once the domain of the bison, tens of millions of them moving across an ocean of grass that ran unbroken from horizon to horizon one of the greatest wildlife spectacles the world has ever known. That grassland is now among the most altered and least protected biomes on the continent, plowed and fenced and largely forgotten, yet where it survives it still holds prairie dogs, pronghorn, and grassland birds vanishing faster than any others in America.

The organizations here work to restore prairie and bring back the bison, keep native grassland unplowed in partnership with ranchers, and rebuild the ecological engine of the American heartland. Their work carries a bold vision: that the great grassland can be made whole again.
