The Corn Belt occupies what was once the tallgrass prairie, one of the richest grasslands the world has ever known and today one of the most completely transformed landscapes on Earth. Less than a fraction of a percent of the original prairie remains. What replaced it feeds much of the world, but at a steep cost to soil, water, and the web of life that the deep-rooted grasses once held together.
The organizations here work to bring nature back into a farmed landscape, restoring prairie remnants, buffering streams, and helping farmers build soil and cut the nutrient runoff that flows all the way to the Gulf. Theirs is a hopeful, practical vision: that the most productive region in America can also, again, be a living one.
