Upwell Turtles
In 2017, Dr. George Shillinger and Dr. Kristin Reed founded Upwell inspired by their collaboration on efforts to protect the last mass nesting beach for critically endangered East Pacific leatherbacks at Las Baulas National Park in Costa Rica. Despite the extraordinary efforts of community members, park officials and scientists, they saw numbers of leatherbacks returning to nest at Las Baulas National Park declining each year because conservation initiatives overlooked threats to turtles in the ocean. Protecting nesting beaches is not enough. Upwell recognizes there is an urgent and unmet conservation need to protect highly migratory marine turtles where they spend most of their lives; in the ocean. Our scientific teams gather in-water data to create real-time predictive models needed for dynamic fisheries management, as well as the creation of marine protected areas and transboundary conservation corridors. By predicting where sea turtles are likely to be, we can create targeted conservation solutions together with governments and local communities that prioritize what protections sea turtles need most, when and where they need them most. Upwell’s staff is grounded in decades o.
