350 Maine

350 Maine grew quickly in 2013 when faced with a pipeline project that would allow export of the dirtiest oil on earth from South Portland. 350 Maine volunteers, particularly from the impacted community, were instrumental in mobilizing community members and supporters around the state to stop this project. Starting in 2017, 350 Maine made a strategic choice to focus on supporting youth. That year we helped start Maine Climate Protectors to bring youth voices to ME’s Dept. of Environmental Protection (via citizen petition for rulemaking). In early 2019, we helped birth the coalition Maine Youth for Climate Justice in collaboration with youth-led and youth-allied groups. In March and Sep. 2019, we organized/supported school strikes across the state. We organized a day of action that brought 400 Maine youth from 20 schools to hold their elected officials accountable for enacting climate legislation. Also in 2019 we became a founding member of Maine Climate Action NOW! a coalition working for a just transition to statewide carbon neutrality and net exportation of 100% renewable energy by 2030.
