Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network

The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network (LMMN) is a registered 501(c)3 since January 2017. LMMN is one of the few organizations providing any education about marine mammals throughout the community and based on our findings, more effort is needed. Implementing education and outreach programs is crucial for changing human behaviors that affect dolphin health. Information about the stranding network and findings on stranded animals is even less well known. Coastal tourism in South Carolina contributes 9 billion to the state’s economy, with Charleston being the largest coastal city in the state (Willis and Straka 2016). Ecotourism is a popular activity for both residents and the 4 million visitors annually (Charleston, SC government Tourism Management Plan). LMMN would like to expand their educational outreach within the community to educate the eco-friendly community about how to view wild dolphins responsibly on the water so to avoid harassment or injury to local marine mammals. Just recently, local researchers have noticed several “begging” dolphins within Charleston waters and LMMN is working to increase our messaging about the dangers of feeding wild dolphins.
