Lemur Conservation Foundation

Inspired by the work of Dr. Ian Tattersall and alarmed by lemurs’ spiraling decline, museum educator Penelope Bodry-Sanders incorporated the Lemur Conservation Foundation (LCF) in 1996. Within four years, a nine-acre forested lemur enclosure was opened in Myakka City, Florida. An office and research center soon followed. In 2000, LCF welcomed its first transfers, two critically- endangered mongoose lemurs. The pair produced their first infant, Alejandro, in 2002. Today, more than 50 lemurs reside on the reserve, enjoying large, open habitats and free-ranging forests. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums' certified facility's 130-acre lemur reserve in Myakka City hosts students and researchers and offers a wide range of educational programs. The Lemur Conservation Foundation also has full-time staff in Madagscar who initiate and oversee programs to preserve the rainforests, protect lemurs, and enhance Madagascar family health and welfare.
