Kultursaat

In accordance with the model of organic farming that the farm is an organism, practitioners have been trying to be self sufficient on vegetable seeds, starting already in the 1950s. With the foundation of the Initiative Circle for Vegetable Seeds from Biodynamic Cultivation* in 1985, these activities were bundled and the propagation of open-pollinated varieties was coordinated. Kultursaat was founded in 1994 by members of the initiative circle as a registered association in Germany, primarily to promote the development of new vegetable varieties. The resulting varieties were to be suitable for the diverse, organic, commercial cultivation and to increase the diversity of varieties and species in agriculture. As of January 2020, more than 90 vegetable varieties have been approved as Kultursaat varieties by the German Federal Plant Variety Office, and for a further 19 varieties, Kultursaat is registered as an official conservation breeder. The varieties maintained by Kultursaat, as well as the ones in the application process are listed here . The purposes of the association are 1. the promotion of science and research in the field of plant breeding 2. the promotion of education.
