The Appalachian Highlands are among the oldest mountains on Earth, worn soft by time yet still commanding, a green spine running through the heart of the East. Their coves and hollows shelter an astonishing richness of life, and their forests have recovered again and again from human hard use from clearing, from coal, from the loss of the chestnut. That resilience is the story of this range.
Conservation groups across the highlands protect forests and the clean streams that flow from them, heal lands scarred by mining, and reconnect a fragmented landscape so black bears and brook trout can move. They work in communities where the mountains and the people are inseparable, and where a healthy forest is also a healthy future.
