Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC)

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) was founded in Boston in 1876 by noted Harvard astronomer Edward Pickering and a group of outdoor enthusiasts. Initially, AMC focused on building hiking trails and its first high mountain hut in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the late 1800s; launching its publishing operations with the first edition of the historic AMC White Mountain Guide in 1907 (still in print today); and taking the lead in conservation advocacy efforts. During the 1900s, AMC established a research division, a mountain leadership training school, a variety of youth education programs, a recreational facilities network that includes lodges, cabins, huts, campsites and shelters throughout the Northeast, and volunteer chapters that still engage thousands of individuals. Through its 11 chapters located from Maine to Virginia, its volunteers, and its staff, AMC sponsors a wide range of activities, including education, research, advocacy, trail stewardship, backcountry lodging facilities offering outdoor recreation opportunities, volunteer projects, public service programs, and outdoor publications. At AMC, connecting you to the freedom and exhilaration of the outdoors.
