Norwegian Fjords Nature Nonprofits

The fjords are what happens when glaciers cut valleys below sea level and the ocean comes in behind them. The result is a coast of extraordinary vertical drama, walls rising a thousand metres straight out of deep water, waterfalls falling the whole way, and a shoreline so convoluted that Norway’s coast, measured properly, is longer than the equator.

These are productive waters, warmed by the Atlantic current far above the latitude where they should be, and they support cod and herring and the seabird cliffs that have fed coastal communities for a thousand years. They also now support one of the largest salmon farming industries in the world, whose sea lice and escapees are a direct and well-documented threat to the wild Atlantic salmon that spawn in the rivers at the fjord heads.

The organizations here defend the wild salmon rivers, push back against mine tailings being dumped directly into fjords, and protect the seabird colonies, whose numbers along this coast have fallen sharply as the fish they depend on shift with the warming sea.
