Sweden’s forests cover most of the country, and they are the economic foundation of the nation: timber, pulp, and paper on a scale that shaped the modern Swedish state. They are also, increasingly, a subject of hard argument, because what the industry calls sustainable forestry is largely clear-felling followed by even-aged replanting, and what that produces is a tree plantation rather than a forest.
The genuinely old forest, with its dead wood and its layered canopy and its lichens hanging like beards, is down to a small fraction of the land and continues to shrink. That remnant carries the species that need it: the white-backed woodpecker, wood-decaying fungi, and beetles that live in nothing but ancient timber. In the far north, the forest is also Sámi reindeer country, and clear-felling destroys the ground lichen that reindeer eat in winter.
The organizations here fight to protect the last old-growth stands, push a powerful forestry sector toward continuous-cover methods, and stand with Sámi communities whose rights and whose herds depend on forests that the industry counts as fibre.
