The boreal is the largest intact forest left on Earth, a band of spruce, fir, pine, and larch wrapping the top of the northern hemisphere across Canada and Scandinavia and Russia. It is not a dramatic landscape in the way mountains are dramatic. It is enormous, repetitive, and quietly essential: a forest of bog and lake and stunted tree that holds more carbon in its soils and peat than all the tropical rainforests combined.
Billions of birds breed here each summer, arriving from every corner of the Americas and Eurasia to exploit an explosion of insects during a short, frantic season, then leaving. It is the nursery of the world’s songbirds, and most of the people who enjoy those birds in the south have no idea where they come from. Caribou move through it in herds, and wolves and lynx and wolverine still have room.
The organizations working here fight the logging, mining, and roads that fragment an unfragmented thing, and they defend the peatlands, whose carbon is safe only so long as they stay wet and cold. Much of the most effective work is led by Indigenous nations asserting stewardship over territories they never ceded. What happens to the boreal is a climate question of the first order.
