The Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated archipelago on Earth, and out of that isolation evolved a world of native species found nowhere else honeycreepers, silverswords, and forests of ohia and koa unique to these volcanoes in the sea. That same isolation left them acutely vulnerable, and Hawaii today bears the tragic distinction of being a global capital of extinction, its native life besieged by introduced species and disease.
The organizations here wage an urgent defense of what remains: fencing and restoring native forest, fighting invasive species, protecting coral reefs, and reviving traditional Hawaiian practices of land and water care. Their work is a last stand for irreplaceable life, carried out with a fierce love for these islands.
