Alaska is wildness at a scale that dwarfs the rest of the nation an expanse of tundra, boreal forest, glacier, and coastline larger than most countries, where whole rivers still run thick with wild salmon and caribou still move across the land in the tens of thousands. It is the last place in America where ecosystems function at their original magnitude, and it is also on the front line of a warming climate, thawing and changing faster than almost anywhere on Earth.
The organizations here defend the great wild rivers and the salmon that are the region’s living wealth, protect the Arctic and its wildlife from industrial development, and stand with Native communities whose ways of life depend on healthy land and water. Their work guards wildness at a scale that exists nowhere else in the country.
