Yaak Valley Forest Council

Northwest Montana's wild Yaak Valley is one of the world’s extremely rare intact inland rainforests, supporting old-growth forests and incredible biodiversity. Fully 25% of all Montana’s species of concern, including the most vulnerable population of grizzly bears in the Lower 48, are found here. Seeing the impact of unchecked extractive industry on the landscape and recognizing the urgent need to protect wild places, the Yaak Valley Forest Council (YVFC) was founded in 1997 by a group of Yaak Valley residents to protect this vital landscape. Since then, we’ve worked with conservation partners, stakeholders, and agencies to preserve critical habitats and brought about positive change in our community. We implement conservation, restoration, education programs focused on protecting and preserving critical wildlife habitat for the sensitive, threatened, and endangered species inhabiting the wild Yaak. Because this special place is overwhelmingly unprotected but publicly managed land, there is a great opportunity as well as grave peril in its future. The opportunity lies within our work, the peril in our absence.  We envision a wild Yaak where grizzly bears and salamanders.
