Western Rivers Conservancy
Western Rivers Conservancy’s motto is, “Sometimes to save a river, you have to buy it.” Of course, you can’t actually buy a river, but you can buy the land along it—and that’s exactly what Western Rivers Conservancy (WRC) has been doing for over 30 years. Western Rivers Conservancy’s mission to acquire outstanding riverlands along our finest rivers and streams to permanently conserve fish and wildlife habitat, and create public access for anglers, hikers, boaters, wildlife watchers, swimmers, paddlers and everyone else who cherishes rivers and the great outdoors. Over the last 30 years, WRC has protected 535 river miles on 236 rivers and streams, and conserved 208,185 acres in nine western states.

Our take
Western Rivers Conservancy operates on a deceptively simple premise: sometimes to save a river, you have to buy it. The organization purchases land along the West's finest rivers and streams, then conveys it into permanent protection, having safeguarded more than 455 river miles and over 227,000 acres across nine western states while securing public access wherever possible. Projects span the Columbia, the Deschutes, the Big Hole, and dozens more. This is tangible, permanent conservation with a measurable footprint, a standout for anyone whose ideal location is moving water.
