Urgewald Campaign for the rainforest e.V.

Meeting the goals set out in the Paris Climate Agreement is a race against time. And whether we succeed or fail in this race is highly dependent on the speed with which we are able to phase out coal-fired power production worldwide. Europe harbors around 1/10th of the world’s coal plant fleet and research shows that European coal plants must be shut down by 2030 if we want to keep the 1.5°C target within reach. Commercial banks are key providers of financing for the global coal industry both through direct lending, but also through the sale of bond and share issues for coal companies. In-depth research we have undertaken over the past years shows that bank financing for the coal industry is highly concentrated. 75% of bank financing to the industry is provided by 25 international banks, of which 6 are from the US and 12 are from Europe. urgewald and partners achieved important campaign successes, leading banks to decline financing for many controversial projects such as mountaintop removal mines in the US, Adani’s planned coal terminal in the area of the Great Barrier Reef or the Rampal coal plant in Bangladesh.
