GLOBICE (Groupe Local d’Observation et d’Identification des Cétacés)
Globice Réunion was born in 2001 from the initiative of a small group of marine enthusiasts, keen to protect the different species of cetaceans on Reunion Island, which were still little known and documented at the time. After several years of learning how to collect data and disseminate scientific knowledge in the field, the association's growing expertise was confirmed by its recognition as an “approved environmental protection association” in 2006. Since then, Globice has multiplied its research programs, scientific publications and public awareness campaigns in support of cetacean conservation on Réunion Island. By initiating the IndoCet scientific network in 2014 with other researchers in the area, Globice is extending its scope of action to the Indian Ocean and anchoring itself in a dynamic of regional cooperation. As a member of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), Globice Réunion will be bringing an international motion for the protection of cetaceans to the World Conservation Congress in 2021, testifying to the credibility and legitimacy acquired by the association over nearly 20 years in the field of conservation.
