The Rift is the Earth pulling itself apart, a continental seam running thousands of kilometres from the Red Sea to Mozambique, and along it lie the volcanoes, escarpments, and deep lakes that make East Africa look the way it looks. The great savannas of the Serengeti and the Mara sit within it, and across them moves the largest overland mammal migration left on the planet, well over a million wildebeest and zebra following the rain in an endless circuit.
The Rift lakes are their own marvel. Isolated and ancient, they have generated cichlid fish radiations that biologists treat as a natural laboratory of evolution, hundreds of species in a single lake, all descended from a few ancestors. This is also, not coincidentally, the landscape in which our own species emerged.
The organizations here defend the migration corridors against fencing and cultivation, work on the hard economics of human-wildlife conflict in places where an elephant can destroy a family’s year in a night, and support community conservancies that have become the most durable form of protection in the region. Where communities hold the benefit, the wildlife holds on.
