Big Hole River Foundation
The 156-mile long, free-flowing Big Hole is ecologically unique as the last refuge of a remnant population of fluvial arctic grayling in the lower 48 states. This is critical habitat for a threatened, native species. Its very presence speaks to the pristine nature of this place and the amount of quality habitat still intact. BHRF recognizes the need for and value of science-based management of an extraordinary resource and the importance of having the data necessary for stakeholders to face those management decisions with clarity. Informed decision making begins with establishing a baseline chemical health of the river, against which we can judge the improvement or deterioration of water quality. This fundamental, long-term data is the cornerstone on which any meaningful future work will stand. For any restoration project, focused fish or wildlife study, consideration of potential new development down the road, or even just simply understanding the impact of public/private use on the resource, this baseline data will be essential. Beyond that, monitoring of chemical water constituents and macroinvertebrates can allow for early detection of deteriorating water quality and subsequ.
