American Trails

Trails save nature... and people too! Whether hiking, bicycling, riding on horseback or participating in motorized recreation nearly everyone uses trails for a similar goal – to spend time outdoors. This time outside, whether a short walk down a paved trail to work in an urban setting, or a hike to a point reachable to only a few Americans makes trail users happier people. Trails are not only a destination in and of themselves, they also lead to campgrounds, scenic overlooks, archeological sites and many other wonders. They also lead to healthier, more satisfied people and more robust local economies. Even those who do not consider how often they use trails – like the father who takes his daughter on a short trek to his favorite fishing hole – should be counted among those who benefit from trails. For too long trails have been taken for granted and the true measure of their impact has not been calculated or shared. American Trails hopes to highlight these many tangible and less apparent benefits of trails.
