Openlands

As one of the first organizations in the United States to address environmental issues within a metropolitan region, Openlands works to connect people to nature close to where they live in the greater Chicago region. Throughout our rich 57-year history, we have secured, protected, and provided public access to more than 55,000 acres of land for parks, forest preserves, land and water greenway corridors, and urban gardens across the tri-state metropolitan region that surrounds the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Over the years, the 12 million residents of the region have benefitted from Openlands’ efforts, enjoying the cleaner air and water that these natural spaces provide to the surrounding areas.
