Corema – Associação de Defesa do Património

Corema - The Heritage Defense Association, was established in 1988 as one of the first non profit environmental organizations registered in Portugal, with its initial activity sparked to prevent further degradation in the River Minho from commercial dredging. Since then, Corema has established itself as a community based organisation in Lanhelas. Corema has played a fundamental role in driving positive change through a wide variety of conservation projects, most notably, with promoting habitat restoration of the endangered "Crowberry" ( Corema album ), a native sand dune plant species, from where the organisations name originates from! Corema has also worked in collaboration with local government in providing consultation services for forestry and landscape management plans, as well as organising educational initiatives, such as: invasive plant species control, coastal beach cleans, birdwatching on the River Minho estuary, raising awareness to important ecosystems (i.e-Wetlands and woodlands) and native tree planting activities with school groups and the wider community. .
